This is a region full of mountains with heights over 1000 m — Peneda, Soajo, Amarela, Gerês, Cabreira. The inhabitants have spread themselves, creating small agricultural properties where work needs constant care. In areas between the rivers Cávado and Douro this is a fact but, closer to the main cities, industry has created lots of residences and factories.
With a strong atlantic influence being near the sea, and due to the different mountain altitudes, all conditions join to give us lots of rain very common in this part of the country. Therefore, the forest areas are oak trees and pine trees (Pinus pinaster) and the main cereal that the land produces is maize. The vine-plants are quite high and from them we produce the white wine.
There are some rivers like Douro, Lima, Ave, C√°vado, T√¢mega, Sousa and a few dams too.
